OYC is an international project sponsored by OBey Foundation, a US-based 501 (c )(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1998. In 2004, under the direction of Executive Director, Kojo Bey, OBey Foundation established a chapter as a NGO (Non Governmental Organization) in Brenu Akyinim, Ghana.
The Directors of OBey Foundation visited villages like Brenu throughout the Central Region and found that there were consistent needs plaguing the children and communities fueled by poverty. OBey Foundation first established OYC in Brenu and has positively affected over 200 children. As a result of the success of the program in Brenu, the Directors put forth a strategic plan to expand to surrounding villages in the Central Region to affect positive change to 2,000 children by the end of 2011. OBey Foundation Directors and Officers have had success in raising funds to support the OYC program activities and staff over the past 6 years, but recognize the need for the OYC program to be self-sustaining in Ghana. The new strategic plan includes a farming project that will generate $30,000-$40,000 annually over the next 3 years in Ghana to support services like educational sponsorship and support, medical exams, de-worming, food programs, mosquito nets and window/door screens for malaria prevention, and water wells to provide clean drinking water.
